How to Put Fussy Babies to Sleep
, 06 04th, 2009
Over the years, moms have developed a number of techniques that can help to put infants to sleep. For the most part, these simple techniques are still used today with great success, as there’s no real replacement for a mother’s care. When infants don’t want to sleep, or happen to wake up and be fussing, the best thing to do is to pick them up and hold them for a few moments. If this doesn’t work (and it does a lot of the time), try to interpret if the infant needs something; whether it’s a diaper change, a bottle, or another blanket to keep them warm. If none of these solutions work, the next step is to use those mothering techniques that have been prevalent for hundreds of years. Place the infant in a baby cradle and attempt to rock them to sleep. The gentle rocking motion will often put babies to sleep just as fast as being held by their mothers. If this doesn’t work, try a combination of holding, rocking in the baby cradle, and even singing or talking. The mother’s voice can do much for calming an infant down.
Even if infants can’t recognize what their mother is saying, they can interpret that voice as something that is calm and consistent. It’s been shown that the sound of the mother’s voice is one of the most powerful tools moms have for calming down their infant.
