Practical Gift Ideas for a Baby Shower

Author: KatiesWorld, 10 27th, 2008

The baby shower provides an opportunity for family and friends to assist new mothers
in purchasing all the necessities for their new baby.  Many essential items like strollers, car seats, baby cribs, and high chairs are quite expensive, more than most family members and friends can afford.  Here is a list of several smaller items that can be purchased on a reasonable budget:

  • Clothes of all sizes from newborn to toddler are affordable and will be much appreciated by a new mother who doesn’t have time to shop while her baby is growing.
  • Baby hampers are great for all those clothes; it’s not uncommon for a baby to change clothes three or four times a day!
  • Bottles are great for a formula feeding mother, while there are pillows, shields, and creams for a breastfeeding mother.
  • Toys are another option; stuffed animals, plushes, and rattles provide entertainment for the infant and the mother.

Origins of the Moses Basket

The story of Moses is told in the book of Exodus, and begins in ancient times when the Egyptians ruled.  The Egyptian King was fearful of the Israelites, and because of this decreed that every newborn Hebrew boy be drowned in the Nile, and all girls be spared.  During this time, a Hebrew woman bore a son, and concealed him for three months.  When she could no longer hide him, she covered a reed basket with tar to make it watertight, placed her baby in it, and laid it at the river’s edge on the Nile.  The Egyptian King’s daughter discovered the basket and found the baby inside, taking him as her own son and naming him Moses.

Over the years, Moses baby basket has been much refined from the original, and is now an appealing item for new mothers.  The modern basket is cushioned and lined with beautiful fabrics, and offers a warm, snug environment for new babies.
